"Although violent and human forces may have created the main object,
Bartlett provides visual interest and psychological comfort by surprising us
with an harmonious order. Perhaps, it is the beneficent light - the kindest aspect of the fire element that gives warmth and life – that accords with the observer. Bartlett’s arresting photographs offer a perpetual opportunity to experience the natural world with an immediacy and freshness that few are able to find,
as well as a lesson on how to behold."

Rebecca A. G. Reynolds
Curator of the John and Margaret Manship Collection,
formerly of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Give Me Your Hands: The Legacy of the Barre Stone Sculptors and Their Stone.

Photographer Leslie D. Bartlett delivers a talk entitled, "Give Me Your Hands: the Legacy of the Barre Stone Sculptors and their Stone." Bartlett talks about the Vermont quarry, the stone-workers, their work and their art, especially Frank Gaylord, "Dean of American Stone Sculptors". The talk focuses on the hands of the workers as emblematic of their hard lives.

Bartlett also describes the immigration of European stone-workers, their lives, and their shortened life expectancy due to exposure to silica dust in the stone, as well as the lives of the widows left behind. Questions and answer concludes the session.

Bartlett is introduced by Professor John P. Beck, Associate Director, Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and the Michigan Monument Builders.
